Sewer Drainage Issue Resolution

May 2022
tree root pulled out of sewer drain that had blocked water from draining correctly

We were recently presented with a sewer issue in Richfield. Basement had constant issue with water backing up from sewers. Even the slightest amount of rain would set off the sump pump. The owner knew this was not right. Their cister over flowed frequently. The gutters, downspouts and footer drain tile all fed into one sewer drainage pipe and the water problems never seemed to resolve.

On-Call Sewer Jetting went in with our camera and scoped the problem. A huge, 16 foot plus long tree root had grown into their drainage pipe and only allowed about a 1 inch space in the pipe for a small amount of water to trickle through to drain. Using our sewer jet we were able to loosen the the root enough to pull it out of the pipe. No need to dig up the yard or disturb the landscaping. And now their drainage system works correctly. The sump pump in not running on overload and their basement is dry.

The photo to the right shows the actual tree root we removed. If you look closely you can see where it is "tail" goes out to the bottom of the photo. Without our removing this root from their sewer drainage system they homeowner would have had continued problems. The earlier you address these issues the less expensive they are to resolve.

Why are your Sewer Lines Backing Up?

February 2022

We get asked this question all the time. The answers vary. But the main culprits are usually one of the following:

  • Tree Roots have grown into your sewer lines. Tree roots seek out water and food. Sewer lines provide both. It is a slow process but it will continually get worse unless correctly addressed.
  • Blockage has built up deep in your sewer lines due to obstructive items being flushed or rinsed into your lines. Often times homeowners turn to harsh chemicals to correct the problem. This may work on a sink drain issue, but if the problem is deep in the line it can cause more harm than good.
  • Fat, oil, grease and food particles can also cause blockage. Pouring hot liquid fats down your drain is not a good idea. The fats are cooling as they travel through your pipes and may end up sitting in elbows or low areas of your pipes as solids. Add food scraps and human hair to the mix and you can get a first rate clog deep in your plumbing system.

So how do you address these issues? Call a good, qualified plumber with the right equipment. Before they come out for a service call, make sure they have scoping camera inspection equipment and sewer hydro jetting capabilities. The combination of these two tools can save you significant time and money in fixing the problem at hand.

The inspection camera can go snake through your pipes and find the clogs clause sending back pictures in real time for the plumber to identify. Once identified, proper steps can be taking to clear the sewer blockage. In the majority of cases the our sewer jetting system can work thought the blockage and clear your clog.
